Mayor of the quake-hit city Van remanded in custody

Posted on: 10/06/2012

Having been heavily overwhelmed by us in the 2009 local elections, the AKP government continues its unlawful political witch-hunt, so-called KCK operations aiming at paralysing our party.

The mayor of Van, Bekir Kaya, has been remanded in custody. He was arrested on 7 June in his house. The mayor has refused giving testimony on Saturday in line with a protest staged by all of the BDP politicians detained, and has been remanded in custody.

Two more BDP politicians have been remanded in custody along with Kaya. They are Cüneyt Caniş and İhsan Güler. They are all detained on charges related to the so called KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) operation.

The people of Van continue to protest against the arrests with day and night sit-in and protests.

Our cochair Selahattin Demirtaş said in the protest in Istanbul, “they want Van to encounter just another quake through the operation. The recovery process has just started by the end of the winter in the city which is still in the aftermath. These detentions and political operations are a big irreverence on the people of Van.”.

Regardless of all those imprisonment operations locked on exhausting us, we will go on in our way of democracy, freedom, equality, justice and peace struggle with intense determination.
