DTK and BDP become ‘live barriers’ to stop military operation

Posted on: 26/04/2012

A convoy of hundreds of cars started an action today to become ‘live barriers’ to stop the military operation carried out in Lice, Kulp and Genç. The action organized by the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) and the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) is facing police prevention. The group continues the action on foot after the police fined and confiscated several cars.

The activists include DTK Co-Chair and Van MP Aysel Tuğluk, DTK Coordination Council member and BDP Batman MP Ayla Akat Ata, BDP deputies Mülkiye Birtane and Nursel Aydoğan, BDP Diyarbakır Co-Chair Zübeyde Zümrüt, mayors and executives from the BDP as well as representatives from non-governmental organizations such as Mothers for Peace Initiative and the Mesopotamian Association of Help for Families of Missing Persons (MEYADER).

The group that is determined to continue the action is moving towards Lice on foot as BDP Istanbul MP Sebahat Tuncel held a press conference in the Parliament to draw attention to the action. Tuncel has emphasized that the action should be considered as a genuine effort for peace. “It is obvious that the Kurdish issue cannot be solved in the mere framework of security. The Kurds’ demands should be taken into consideration,” said Tuncel.
